Wearing the birthstone associated with your date of birth is thought to bring good luck and protection. Crystal, the complementary birthstone for April, is an affordable yet beautiful alternative to diamonds. Swarovski crystals are very popular in today's fashion world.
Daniel Swarovski was born to a glass cutter in Northern Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. His father owned a small glass factory where young Daniel served a two-year apprenticeship, gaining expertise in the art of glass cutting. In 1892, he invented, and soon after patented, a machine that revolutionized the process of crystal cutting.
The Swarovski company was founded in 1895. A crystal cutting factory was established in Wattens, Tyrol, Austria, to take advantage of local water and power needed for the energy-intensive grinding processes which Daniel Swarovski had patented. He also needed to move away from competitors to keep his inventions a secret.
The glamorous Aurora Borealis (AB) crystal effect was created in the 1950s, inspired by nature's display of colors at the North Pole, the northern lights.
