Emerald, the birthstone of May, symbolizes the eternally returning spring. The velvety green color of emerald is a perfect match for spring and summer fashions.
Emeralds are members of the beryl family of minerals. Their distinctive green color occurs when the beryl contains either chromium or vanadium. A flawless emerald is a rare find.
Emeralds have been prized since ancient times. Emerald history really does begin in Egypt. The famous Cleopatra mines, located some 440 miles southeast of Cairo, were worked by the Egyptians and later the Romans and Turks. Today, Colombian emeralds are among the world's most beautiful. Quality emeralds are also found in India, South Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, and Zimbabwe. Recent finds in North Carolina may provide quality emeralds if the mine continues to produce stones.
In ancient times emeralds held a real fascination for people. That fascination is still with us today. Not only are emeralds coveted for their beauty, but also for their supposed magical and healing powers. Emeralds are also believed to enhance love and contentment.

Prolong The Life of Your Jewelry |
Who doesn't want their jewelry to look as terrific as the day they first purchased it? Every type of jewelry, including gold, sterling silver, and gemstone, needs to be cared for properly so it will last a lifetime. Here are four tips to help you care for your jewelry.
Tip #1: Remove your jewelry or put it on last.
Prolong the life of your jewelry by removing it when cleaning, using harsh chemicals, swimming, bathing or engaging in sports. Products such as perfume, hand lotion and even hair spray can cause residue to build up on your jewelry and make it more difficult to clean so always put your jewelry on last.
Tip # 2: Store your jewelry in small bags with a zip closure.
Silver will oxidize, or tarnish, when exposed to air. To preserve the beauty of your sterling silver jewelry, wipe or polish the piece after you've worn it. Store pieces in zip-loc plastic bags. Gold can also become dull and require polishing and may be stored in zip-loc plastic bags.
Tip # 3: Separate jewelry pieces to prevent scratching.
Store pieces separately so they do not scratch or chip each other.
Tip # 4: Clean your jewelry with care.
Simply soaking your jewelry in warm water mixed with a small amount of dish soap for 5-10 minutes is sometimes all that is needed to keep your jewelry sparkling. Swish your jewelry in the water to loosen the dirt. Rinse the jewelry under lukewarm water and dry it with a soft cotton cloth.
If deeper cleaning is required, choose a cleaner that is made for your type of metal and/or gemstones. Some cleaners and polishing cloths are made for use on sterling silver jewelry and others are for use on gold jewelry. If using a chemical cleaner, be sure to read the directions. It is best to use a polishing cloth on pieces with intentionally darkened (or oxidized) areas as the darkened areas are part of the design. Dipping these pieces in a cleaning solution will remove the oxidized areas. Also, use a polishing cloth on any piece with a pearl or soft stone such as turquoise or lapis.
